CAMPUR KODE DAN ALIH KODE TUTURAN MASYARAKAT JAWA LINTAS GENERASI DI WONOMULYO: KAJIAN SOSIOLINGUISTIK

Abstract

This study examines code-mixing and code-switching in the speech of first- and second-generation Javanese communities in Wonomulyo, Polewali Mandar Regency, from a sociolinguistic perspective. The research focuses on identifying the forms of code-mixing and code-switching as well as exploring differences in language use patterns between generations within a multilingual social environment. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of naturally occurring speech among selected informants from first- and second-generation Javanese speakers. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that code-mixing is more dominant than code-switching in daily interactions, particularly in informal communication settings. Code-mixing appears in the forms of words, phrases, expressions, and clauses involving Javanese, Indonesian, and Mandar elements. Meanwhile, code-switching occurs due to changes in communicative situations, interlocutors, and speech purposes. The study also indicates generational differences in language behavior. First-generation speakers tend to maintain Javanese as their primary language, whereas second-generation speakers more frequently incorporate Indonesian and other local linguistic elements in their speech. These findings demonstrate that code-mixing and code-switching function not only as communication strategies but also as reflections of linguistic adaptation and intergenerational language shift in multilingual communities.
